Hyundai Launches ‘Channel Hyundai’ for Smart TVs to Provide Digital Customer Experience
- The smart tv app features multimedia content and digital interface for new customer experience amid pandemic
- World premiere of the all-new 2021 Tucson will be broadcast on the app on September 15
- The app is available on LG and Samsung smart TVs

– Hyundai Motor Company is leading the digital transformation in the era of COVID-19 and beyond with the launch of ‘Channel Hyundai’, an interactive app for smart TVs featuring multimedia content and a digital interface for customers to experience the brand in a new way.
Channel Hyundai offers various online content and services to give customers direct access to the world of Hyundai from the comfort of their homes.

“Channel Hyundai is our solution to the growing need for enhanced digital experiences amid the global pandemic,” said Wonhong Cho, Executive Vice President and Global Chief Marketing Officer of Hyundai Motor. “Our hope is that watching content on the big screen will bring family members together for a shared digital experience, since digital experiences can often feel isolated.”

Hyundai Motor is initially presenting three categories within the app – LIVE, TV and MODELS – with plans to add more features in the future.
The LIVE category offers product launches and presentations on the company’s vision, including the upcoming world premiere of the all-new 2021 Hyundai Tucson, which will be broadcast on the app in high-resolution video on September 15.

The TV category features videos that cover a wide range of lifestyle topics, from Hyundai’s various partnerships with the art community to its motorsport activities. Hyundai is also planning to produce original content exclusively for Channel Hyundai.
The MODELS category is for those who want to find out more about Hyundai vehicles. The Channel Hyundai app features not only videos, but also a virtual interactive showroom that allows customers to get first-hand virtual experience of key features on Hyundai models.

New online content and services will be added over time to provide customers an extensive collection of branded content with seamless access over smart TVs. The content are currently in English, with subtitles and other language contents in the making.

The Channel Hyundai app is available on LG and Samsung smart TVs manufactured in 2017 or beyond, and with webOS 3.5 or higher for LG models. Hyundai plans to make the app more widely available on more brand of smart TVs in the future.
The app can be downloaded under the search words “Hyundai” or “channel Hyundai" on LG Content Store or Samsung TV App Store. All content can also be viewed on the Channel Hyundai website at Vistit Channel .

HMG Recruits Top AI Scholars to Pioneer Future Mobility Solutions, Customer Experiences
- World-renowned AI scholars Tomaso A. Poggio and Daniela L. Rus to join Hyundai Motor Group’s AI Technology Advisory Group
- Poggio and Rus to consult on planning future AI-based projects; establishment of AI research organizations; and new business opportunities such as robotics and healthcare
- Hyundai Motor Group expects to enhance AI capabilities to rev up development of future vehicles and secure sustainable growth model

–Hyundai Motor Group (HMG) has recruited world-renowned scholars in artificial intelligence, Tomaso A. Poggio and Daniela L. Rus, to help steer its future artificial intelligence development as part of its AI Technology Advisory Group.

As leading minds in the AI field, they will work with Hyundai staff at the advisory group, offering outside expert counsel for planning and engineering the company’s overall AI investment, research and development.

Hyundai Motor Group established the advisory group, which consists of many experts in the field. Using AI, the advisory group is tasked with consulting on (1) the planning of new AI-based technology strategies and business opportunities, (2) the establishment of global research organizations, and (3) investments for securing AI-related research infrastructure.

To pioneer the future of sustainable mobility, HMG is undergoing an ambitious transformation from an automotive manufacturer to Smart Mobility Solution Provider and it is invested and engaged in various projects and collaborations covering AI, autonomous driving, electrification and Mobility as a Service (MaaS).

The recruitment of prominent AI professionals is expected to elevate and strengthen Hyundai Motor Group’s expertise in AI technology research in myriad ways, helping HMG proactively respond to the growing competition in future vehicle development, all of which is essential for sustainable growth.

Professor Tomaso A. Poggio is currently the Eugene McDermott Professor at the Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences; Director, Center for Brains, Minds and Machines; member of the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology; and since 2000, member of the faculty of the McGovern Institute for Brain Research.

Poggio is considered one of the world's most distinguished scholars in neural network research and AI applications. He has been working on the development and analysis of human visual systems into theoretical models and won the American Society for Neuroscience Swatz Prize in theoretical computational neuroscience. Christoph Koch, CEO and chief science officer of the Allen Institute; Amnon Shashua, CTO and founder of Mobileye; and Demis Hassabis, CEO and founder of DeepMind are some of his most well-known disciples.

Daniela L. Rus is currently the Andrew and Erna Viterbi Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and Director of the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She has been researching various forms of robotics and autonomous driving to improve human life. In recognition of her research achievements, she was selected as the winner of the MacArthur Fellowship awarded by the MacArthur Foundation in the U.S. and was appointed a member of the U.S. Presidential Advisory Committee on Science and Technology in April this year

Since the formation of the advisory group, Hyundai Motor Group has exchanged opinions with its advisors on various new businesses opportunities, including robotics, advancement of AI models and healthcare mobility solutions as well as ways to improve quality of vehicles.

The two sides are collaborating in diverse areas, including improving the learning efficiency of the AI-based deep learning image recognition technology using limited data (Few-shot Learning); acquiring the technology verifying to the user the rationale behind an AI-based recognition (eXplainable AI, or XAI); and the technology that simultaneously reflects newly-generated data in training AI model and interpretation.

On robotics, the advisory group is offering Hyundai Motor Group counsel on the prospects, ripple effects and potential partners of the robotics industry. The two sides plan to materialize their project direction for the robotics business, which can be synergized with HMG’s internally possessed technologies.

In addition, HMG and the advisory group are collaborating under diverse initiatives, including (1) potential locations for its AI research organization, (2) AI research topics related to mobility businesses, and (3) new research partner candidates for external collaboration. With the cooperation with the advisory group, HMG has been able to plan a roadmap for maximizing synergies in its open innovation strategy at Hyundai Motor Group Innovation Center in Singapore, which incorporates AIR Center, an organization dedicated to AI research and development in Singapore. The AIR Center will collaborate with AIRS Company, an organization dedicated to AI research and development at HMG.

Hyundai Motor Group Executive Vice Chairman Identifies Key Steps to Accelerate to Hydrogen Society
Executive Vice Chairman Euisun Chung identified three key steps to accelerate the transition to a hydrogen society during the Hydrogen Council CEO Meeting in Paris:

SEOUL, January 21, 2019 - Hyundai Motor Group Executive Vice Chairman (EVC) and Hydrogen Council Co-chair Euisun Chung has identified three key steps to accelerate the transition to a hydrogen society during the Hydrogen Council’s third annual CEO Meeting in Paris, France.
EVC Chung opened the meeting stressing that there is “no shortcut to creating a future hydrogen society,” emphasizing that it is essential to establish detailed implementation plans for respective sectors and different stages of the industry’s development. To achieve this, the EVC recommended three key action items: reduce cost through technological innovation, create a comprehensive safety management system and foster broad acceptance of hydrogen.
As a first step, EVC Chung recommended achieving cost reductions through technological innovation in all sectors of the hydrogen industry. In order to fully tap hydrogen’s potential as the ultimate alternative to fossil fuel, new creative ways of lowering cost in a shorter time span must be sought across the entire value chain - including production, storage, distribution and application.
EVC Chung also stressed the need to establish a comprehensive safety management system throughout the entire hydrogen value chain in order to convince the general public that hydrogen is completely reliable in terms of safety.
To further foster a broad acceptance of hydrogen, EVC Chung underlined the need for governments and policymakers to advocate the inclusive benefits of hydrogen and promote the vision of a hydrogen society and the opportunities it will create. This is in line with the co-chair’s message as conveyed in a recent interview with Hydrogen Council, where he said the council will continue collaborating with regional and national hydrogen associations to analyze the current status of government policies, regulations and technologies, in turn providing viable technological solutions and policy suggestions.
Also, in his welcome address, EVC Chung praised the hard work and dedication of all members and recognized their collective efforts to move the coalition forward. In particular, he thanked the members’ commitment in working toward the council’s mission by contributing their respective expertise.
“We deserve to be proud of our achievements so far, only three years after Hydrogen Council was born,” EVC Chung said. “Today, we’ll take stock of our progress, and reflect on our assessments to forge our strategy for this year and beyond.
” New Report: Hydrogen Cost Projected to Fall Sharply and Sooner than Expected
Yesterday, the Hydrogen Council published a new report, Path to Hydrogen Competitiveness: A Cost Perspective, demonstrating that the cost of hydrogen solutions will fall sharply within the next decade, sooner than previously expected.
As scale up of production, distribution and equipment manufacturing continues, cost is projected to decrease by up to 50 percent by 2030 for a wide range of applications, making hydrogen financially competitive with other low-carbon alternatives and, in some cases, even conventional options. Commissioned by the Hydrogen Council and delivered by McKinsey & Company in partnership with E4tech, the report used a rigorous methodology to collect and analyse an unprecedented 25,000 data points from 30 companies representing the entire hydrogen value chain across four key geographies (US, Europe, Japan/Korea and China). An independent advisory group comprised of industry experts also reviewed the data.
The report shows significant cost reductions expected across more than 20 different hydrogen applications, such as long-distance and heavy-duty transportation, industrial heating, and balancing of the power system, comprising roughly 15 percent of global energy consumption - a material opportunity. According to the report, this cost trajectory can be attributed mainly to:
· Dramatically falling costs of renewable electricity generation
· Growing utilisation of distribution system infrastructure
· Scaling up of manufacturing
To deliver on this opportunity, supporting policies will be required in key geographies, together with investment support of around $70 billion in the lead up to 2030. While this figure is sizable, it accounts for less than 5 percent of annual global spending on energy. For comparison, support provided to renewables in Germany totalled roughly $30 billion in 2019.
“A clean energy future with hydrogen is closer than we think, because the industry has been working hard on addressing remaining challenges. This report shows what remains to be done and defines a clear path forward,” said Benoit Potier, chairman and CEO of Air Liquide and co-chair of the Hydrogen Council. “2020 marks the beginning of a new era for energy: As the potential for hydrogen to become part of our global energy system becomes a reality, we can expect fewer emissions and improved security and flexibility. This announces the decade of hydrogen.”
“The Hydrogen Council hopes that the report’s findings will not only increase public awareness about the potential of hydrogen to power everyday lives, but also debunk the myth that a hydrogen economy is unattainable due to cost,” EVC Chung said. “If we are to reach our global climate goals by mid-century and reap the benefits of hydrogen, now is the time to act.
” Today’s report was launched in the presence of more than 80 CEOs and other senior executives at the Hydrogen Council’s annual meeting, taking place alongside the President of France, Emmanuel Macron’s Choose France! Summit and the World Economic Forum in Davos. The CEO event brought these industry leaders together to reiterate their commitment to hydrogen and set the path for scale up of infrastructure and usage in the coming years. EVC Chung at Choose France Summit and World Economic Forum Following the Hydrogen Council Third Annual CEO Meeting on Monday, EVC Chung attended the annual Choose France summit held at Versailles Palace on the same day.
Choose France is an initiative led by the French government to attract foreign investments. Held at Château de Versailles, Choose France invited more than 190 global business leaders this year and was attended by President Emmanuel Macron and several members of the French Government, including the prime minister, major ministers and regional representatives. Today, EVC Chung will attend the 2020 World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, to be held on 21-24 January under the theme “Stakeholders for a Cohesive and Sustainable World”. The EVC has also been invited to this year’s International Business Council (IBC) Winter Meeting.

HMG Develops World First Active Shift Control for Hybrids to Enhance Fuel Economy
SEOUL, July 19, 2019– Hyundai Motor Group has developed the world’s first Active Shift Control (ASC) transmission technology. The innovation optimizes transmission efficiency by monitoring gear shifts 500 times per second, precisely adjusting the transmission rotation speed to for faster shift times. The new technology will premiere in the upcoming Hyundai Sonata Hybrid and eventually benefit other upcoming Hyundai and Kia hybrids.
ASC applies new control logic software to the Hybrid Control Unit (HCU), which then controls the electric motor to align the rotational speeds of the engine and transmission to reduce gear shift time by 30%. The technology also delivers smoother gear changes despite quicker shift times.
